For a SME whose just starting its business but does not have the adequate finance to purchase popular software licenses, the Internet has resources which can provide licensed software that are released under the well known “General Public License” (or GPL), free from any payment for the license, at a cost which is affordable. These software are fully equipped with help manuals and documentation that may assist any one to understand how the software can be installed and operated, and maintained.
Not only are these software affordable but the source code for these software are open, which means any programmer can easily modify and customize the software to their own requirement without risking legal suits.
GPL software is easily download-able from the Internet and can completely provide all basic functionality to any PC for a SME to use. This includes the Operating System, Office Applications such as Word Processors, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentation Programs, Printer, Scanning, Email, Browsers and even Fax programs. In addition, Desktop Publishing programs are easily available and installable. The possibilities for using such resources from the Internet are practically endless. And all are available under proper License.
However, there may be instances where an SME may require more professional and technical help to utilize software for a particular special application or requirement; such as an intra-company website, or a customized accounting application. Acquiring this software and understanding its use and maintenance can require a high degree of technical know-how and skill, and it may not be possible for an SME to invest in these kinds of resources.
The solution may be for our local ICT companies, who have these skill sets, to come forward and offer their services to provide these software solutions to SMEs.
With the advantage that GPL software provides in being free from license fees, the service company need not charge for the software license, but only for the services they can provide in terms of customization, installation and maintenance.
